Free Webinar: You Can’t Audit What You Don’t Understand

Part of the Verracy 2026 Free Webinar Series, this session encourages auditors to “Level Up” from reviewers of activity to interpreters of business risk.

Today’s auditors are expected to provide insight on increasingly complex organizations, technologies, and business models. Yet many audit engagements are performed with only a surface-level understanding of how the underlying business actually creates value.

While standards, methodologies, and testing techniques remain important, audit quality is ultimately limited by the auditor’s understanding of the business itself. When auditors focus primarily on controls, procedures, and documentation without understanding the operational realities behind them, significant risks can be overlooked and opportunities for meaningful insight are lost.

This session challenges auditors to move beyond compliance-focused auditing and develop deeper business fluency. Participants will learn why understanding strategy, operations, incentives, and decision-making is critical to providing valuable assurance and becoming a trusted advisor to management and the board.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this session, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate how organizational strategy, incentives, and business purpose shape risk
  • Recognize when auditors assess risk without truly understanding the business behind it
  • Identify common indicators of surface-level audit planning and execution
  • Apply practical techniques to improve business fluency before and during audit engagements
