Internal controls are essential — but they are not a substitute for judgment.

In many organizations, internal audit is overly focused on validating controls rather than understanding how the business actually operates. This approach can feel safe, defensible, and comfortable, but it can create a false sense of assurance and leave the most meaningful risks unexamined.

This session challenges auditors to rethink the role of controls in providing assurance. Participants will explore why control-centric audits often miss emerging, complex, and value-eroding risks, and why understanding the business thoroughly and embracing professional judgment, skepticism and courage are critical to protecting organizational value.
